Sap

I'm a sucker for romance, trials, and tears. Working through some really heart-wrenching scenes as I revise WOLFSBANE, you'd think I was going through my own break up. I have some of the same songs set on my iPod to replay over and over and over as I write my way through specific events. There are moments when I hear a song and a scene just blossoms in my mind. I've discovered that if I really hang onto that song and drown myself in it, the scene becomes all the more powerful as I'm writing.

Though it also means I cry a lot because IN MY BOOK I HAZ SAD STUFF HAPPENZ. But getting that emotionally invovled in the writing is one of my favorite parts of the craft.

So here is the song I've had on repeat all night while writing.

Your challenge: What type of scene would this song write for you?

  1. Well using a song an an inspiration is something I haven't tried before. But let me nibble on this challenge.

It's dark, quiet... someone is at the door. It must be her, I love myself for believing in it. Yes, it is her. I welcome her and we laugh. Her laughter is more beautiful, her neck a defining beauty, everytime she throws her head up to laugh; and her eyes are a mystery, a mystery deeper than my own sorrows. We talk.

I live the old times, through, the halo of the night bulb behind her hair, the sparkle in her teeth, the expressions of her hands.

I listen, say a few words, and let het talk.

  3. That's haunting and definitely a scene of loss and regret.
Just the other day I was writing a sad scene and knew just what I wanted to listen to: the duet Wish I Could Stay by Giles and Amber in Once More With Feeling.
There are several songs from the movie Once that also rip my heart out and let me write about it. Sigh.

  5. I can't play it here at work, but I'll check it out tonight hopefully and let you know.

I also have a song on repeat lately, but I don't have a clue what it is. It's beautiful though and definitely has a sappy quality to it.

  6. OMG! What are you doing?!

I'm right there with you on the music thing. I have one or two songs that carry through the entire book, then songs for each scene within the book. Writer's block, for me, is when my Muse can't find the right musical inspiration.
