St. Augustine

I thought I'd share some of my traveling photos over the next few posts.

The past four days I was in St. Augustine for an Early American Borderlands conference - the conference was great, admittedly the location didn't hurt one bit.
One of the highlights was visiting El Casillo de San Marcos, which has stood in St. Augustine since 1565, making it the oldest masonry defense in the U.S. I am a big fan of old things. Particularly forts with bastions and lookout towers from which to spy English and Dutch corsairs!

I also like cannons.
And interpreters in costume.
I also had a lovely time with my dear friend, Christian - who can vouch for my haunted phone story and Heather and her oh-so-cute son Mateo.
It was a great trip - today I'm across the continent in Seattle. I'm heading out to walk around now and will post pics tomorrow!

  1. I visited St. Augustine last summer -- it's gorgeous there! The village is so quaint and fun to wander through. Looks like you had great weather. It was HOT when we were there! Visiting the fort was a highlight for us too, and the kids loved when they shot the cannons.

Great pics! Have a good time in Seattle!

  3. You know I live less than two hours from St. Augustine and don't go there enough. But I love the history and atmosphere of the area.

The last time I went I found out pets were allowed downtown, so I brought my dogs and just walked around the city, taking it all in. It broke my heart a little that the old schoolhouse was starting to fall apart and they had to repair it with nowhere-near-authentic boards that stuck out like a sore thumb.

Glad you had fun on your trip!
